Kineticel kinetic charged batteries

blog it
AT:Green recaps a post by their Hometech site about Yael Miller's Kineticel motion-rechargeable batteries.

I like AT: Green's ideas for keeping the cells charged and useful through normal activity (toilet flushing to power bathroom appliances, etc.). 1,000 moving parts, 1,000 ways to charge.
I definitely want these for my place.

Wall Drawer

A nifty little invention from Patrick Frey and Markus Boge. Because it attaches to the wall, you can put it nearly anywhere without taking up floorspace. These would be especially helpful in small spaces, but I could see them working well anywhere.

Handmade by Flora, and adorable. I may just have to figure out how to do this myself.

Tord Boontje's winter wonderland

A post about Boontje's leaf rug from Apartment Therapy led me to wonder what he's been up to since his collaboration with Target for their holiday campaign.

Scanning through his studio's Web site, I found a bunch of great, imaginative pieces, including a chair that looks like the back of a wedding gown. One of his installations is titled "Winter Wonderland," and completely lives up to its name.

Too much of a good thing?

blog it
Apartment Therapy: San Francisco reports on an article in the Seattle Times about Janna Howell's decoupaged apartment.

Her rented apartment bears the cut-and-paste artwork of the world, right down to the toilet seat and the fridge.

Some of the design applications are quite clever and attractive, if you allow your eye to separate them out.

Better than plastic?

With the question of chemicals leeching out of plastics and into foods during cooking (remember back when food was safe?) People are turning back to glass storage dishes. I doubt I'd put one in the Bear's lunch box, but from a green perspective, they're worth considering for around the house.

Recycled sound

Amplify your MP3 player with paper ceramic "speakers." The paper source is used musical scores.

It's a neat idea, and has the potential to be a cool DIY project as well.

Great idea made of groovy stuff

Antique wood remade into furniture items. I like the design of the Catalina kitchen island from groovystuff. It's convenient, portable, and just plain looks good. I'd love to know the history of the piece -- where the wood came from, etc.

Wonderful wall coverings

blog it
Apartment Therapy shared these great wall coverings by Ferm Living. I couldn't find a link to an online store, but I loved these two patterns that were on the AT site.

I'm not really a wallpaper person - my tastes change too often to make that kind of investment - but I liked the style of the first and the wit of the second.

For your environmentally friendly lunch box

Wrap-N-Mat by resuablebags.com. It's a sandwich wrap and a placemat in one, much less wasteful than plastic bags, and theoretically more economical in the long run. Machine washable, food safe, made with Fair Labor practices.

I love the eco-print.

Over at Instructables, they have a DIY hack for the toilet tank sinks that have been popular in the green blogosphere for awhile now. It's a great idea, and definitely worth trying.

Rat de Cave candlestick

I had a similar candleholder and I don't know what became of it. I loved the spiral holder, with its clever lever at the bottom that pushes the candle up as it burns down.

A photo from a "1939-ish" Popular Science magazine, featuring Bill Porter of East St. Louis. He built this easy chair to include 17 accessories, "including a radio, bookcase, electric fan, shoe-shining and pipe-smoking equipment, and compartments for food and beverages. A pull on a “gearshift” lever lowers the back, converting the chair into a bed."

Guys like this really know how to live, and they're not afraid to put in the time and effort to do it.
